Harris Primary Academy Merton Continues to be “Outstanding”

Following a visit at the end of February 2024, Ofsted inspectors have confirmed that Harris Primary Academy Merton continues to be “Outstanding”.  This is excellent news and is testament to our entire Academy community.

The inspectors have given us a fantastic report in which they have described our Academy as an ‘exceptionally nurturing community where pupils flourish’.  This is a wonderful endorsement of our school and we are very pleased that the inspectors noticed how happy our pupils are and how much they achieve during their time here.

The inspectors’ report highlights a number of the Academy’s strengths including our ambitious curriculum, our focus on reading and the way in which we prepare pupils for the next stage of their education.

Here is what the inspectors said about us:

On how much our pupils enjoy coming to school:

  • “Pupils are safe and happy here.”
  • “Staff ensure that all pupils feel welcome and part of this inclusive community.”
  • “Pupils’ attitudes to learning are exceptional.”
  • “Pupils enjoy a range of thoughtfully planned outings, events and after-school clubs.”

On our high standards of teaching and learning:

  • “[Pupils] receive a well-rounded education and produce work of high quality across different subjects.”
  • “The school’s ambitious curriculum sets out a deep body of knowledge across a broad range of subjects.”
  • “The curriculum is delivered well.”
  • “Pupils reach the ambitious end points the school has set for them.”

On the importance of reading at the Academy:

  • “Teaching pupils to read is treated as a priority at the school.”
  • “Leaders have made sure that all staff are experts in teaching pupils to read.”
  • “Pupils show a genuine love of reading and of books.”

On our focus on pupils’ personal development:

  • “Pupils’ personal development is fundamental to the education that they receive at the academy.”
  • “The school has high aspirations for all its pupils/”
  • “[Pupils] are well prepared for the next stage of their education and for their future lives.”

On our expert and dedicated staff:

  • “Staff foster highly positive relationships with pupils and families.”
  • “Teachers’ subject knowledge is strong.”
  • “Morale is high and the comment of one staff member echoed those of many others: ‘this school is my happy place.’”

On our excellent Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) provision:

  • “The school is equally ambitious for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities.”
  • “Pupils with SEND, including those in the additional resource provision, are fully immersed in the school’s curriculum.”
  • “Staff adapt teaching skilfully to meet the individual needs of pupils.”
